How to Find Phone Numbers in Illinois

There are a few ways to look up phone numbers for Illinois government offices. The fastest method is to use an online phone directory. The state runs one for its own staff. Most counties post their department contacts on a county website. Cities and villages do the same on their own sites. You can also call a main switchboard number, and the operator will transfer you to the right department or give you a direct line.

If you need a full list of contacts for a specific office, you can file a request under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. Under 5 ILCS 140, public bodies must give you access to their records. That includes phone directories and staff lists. Most agencies respond within 5 business days. The first 50 pages of any request are typically free. After that, you pay 10 to 15 cents per page. Commercial requests take up to 21 business days. A written request is best for tracking, but many offices in Illinois now take FOIA requests by email too.

Note: Some smaller cities may not have a phone directory posted online, so calling city hall is often the quickest route.
